A Random Reflection

Alright, here we go, a random blog post. Firstly, I will begin with addressing the interactive oral which we had yesterday. It was our final interactive oral and definitely wan't our best to say the least. I felt that I didn't provide much substance to the discussion this time and feel that overall, as a class, we were definitely not engaged with Chronicle compared to A Doll's House. The one we did on Ibsen's "A Doll's House" was very thought provoking and intellectually stimulating however, yesterday was sadly a disappointment. I do feel that it was in some ways beneficial to our understanding of the book such as exploring the contextual considerations that it encompasses. I personally prepared the biographical and historical aspects even though they were slightly under-discussed as whenever we would talk about them there would be an abrupt change of topic. This resulted in us not exploring the historical aspects in very thorough detail. (I'll take th...

The Political Affiliation of Gabriel Garcia Marquez

Image
Gabriel Garcia Marquez, affectionately known as "Gabo" is a world-famous acclaimed Colombian novelist. Gabriel viewed himself as a journalist first followed by a novelist. However, above all he considered himself a realist. Gabriel is the founder of the literary genre coined "Magic Realism". A genre which incorporates fantastic or mythical elements into realist literature. Gabriel Garcia Marquez pertained outwardly to his political affiliations and views. Gabriel was a passionate believer in the leftist ideological outlooks of Karl Marx and therefore, had developed a sincere (in the eyes of the public) relationship with the  communist leader who fueled the revolution in Cuba and ruled with an iron fist, Mr. Fidel Castro. Gabriel had previously stated that their profound relationship was one built on their common interest in literature. Gabriel and Castro were both two individuals intrigued by literature and therefore, Castro began to thoroughly admire Gabriel's ...

Torvald Sympathy Scale

Prescribed gender roles in "A Doll's House" are prevalent in all characters that interact within the play. Nora, is a victim of society's norms as she places her moral conscious above the law of mankind which is considered a crime. However, in reality, the crime she committed was to save her husband which she loved. " According to it a woman has no right to spare her old dying father, or to save her husband's life. I can't believe that". This quote implies that the patriarchal laws existing in the roots of society condemn Nora for carrying out an act of justice.  In Ibsen's realist play there are no antagonistic characters and all the characters have flaws which are constantly observed by the reader. Torvald, a character who one would believe to be an un-respected male in today's society was acting the role of a "perfect" husband and provider for the family. However, in the climax of the play Ibsen depicts the flaws which Torvald...

Nora Helmer - The Masterful Manipulator

Image
Nora is an evolving character who progresses through the play from seemingly a naïve to mature mindset about the social norms which exist in their society. From the beginning of the play, Ibsen shines a light on the manipulative and seductive aspect of Nora. When talking with Mrs. Linde, Nora exposes her “big secret” and Ibsen displays her manipulative mindset through the stage direction “meditatively, and with half a smile” exemplifying her manipulative side as the visual imagery of “half” the smile infers Nora smirking and having a masterful plan as to not reveal the secret until she is “no longer as nice-looking as I am now” (Page 14). This exemplifies Nora’s seductive side as she is utilizing her attractive physique to lure in Torvald and possess him. This shows that although society patronizes her, Nora is fully understanding of the social norms and is manipulative of them to benefit her.  Ibsen further depicts Nora’s manipulative character on Page 38 where Ibsen portrays...
