Consolidating My Topic Choice
The Written Assignment is due in exactly 1 month and 2 days from today (May 11th, 2019). I have been brainstorming several topics which I wanted to focus on. Mainly the use of foil characters which I have narrowed down to Dr. Rank and Mrs. Linde. Honestly, I feel that I would be able to do it with Mrs. Linde as I can contrast her with Nora. However, it's probably an overused topic choice as it sprang to mind upon first glance. Therefore, I decided that I will (with 90% certainty) do my written assignment on Dr. Rank. Some of the things which I could discuss in the written assignment are how Dr. Rank is contrasted to society (ie the degrading backbone of society, how unconcerned he is of others opinions). This is then juxtaposed with Torvald and how he is concerned about others' opinions of him. They are further contrasted with the treatment of their wives. Torvald patronizes his wife whereas Dr. Rank is kind and nurturing (Ibsen uses him to criticize society's general treatment of women). Those are just some of the ideas which I have and I have began to collect quotes that I feel would support the arguments effectively. I have currently devised a plan for the written assignment (which I can hopefully stick by). I hope to finish collecting the quotes and re-reading the book (to highlight quotes which involve Dr. Rank) by next week Saturday (which gives me a week to complete it).
Now that I've discussed the written assignment, let's begin discussing my plan for reviewing for the Paper 1 exam. Currently, I have a preference for prose although I am not 100% going to do prose if the poem is rich in imagery or characterization during the paper 1. What's interesting is that I've actually grown some appreciation towards poems during the paper 1's. However, an issue with poetry for me is that the structural features and the nuances which are specific to poems have not been taught. Therefore, my poetry analysis is limited in that aspect. An issue I have with prose is that it is so large and takes time to analyze. Last prose we did I though I flunked it because I went way too overboard with an extended metaphor. However, it turned out well compared to what I was expecting. For that prose I analyzed it for 30 minutes which leads me to believe that if I spend more time on analyzing and structuring my response, I will achieve a higher grade.
That's me done for this week!
